The Power of Instagram: How To Sell Your Art By Tapping Into The 130 Million Weekly Shoppers
Episode 47 Show Transcript - Empowered Artist Podcast
Hey there, fellow artists! Welcome back to another episode of Empowered Artist Podcast! I'm your host, Jenna Webb, and today, we're diving deep into the world of selling art online. Whether you're just starting out or looking to scale your online art business, I've got you covered with some expert tips and strategies to help you succeed.
Start Your Online Presence on Social Media and Build Your Website as a Later Step
Having a social media presence is an essential part of your long-term art business success. Let me share a personal experience—I sold over a hundred paintings in my first year in the art business, but not a single one from my very first art gallery. That's the power of online presence.
Consumers prefer to shop on social media, with 56.1% of internet users purchasing a product online at least once a week, and the biggest source of that is social media. That's why I recommend focusing on building your social media presence before investing time and resources into a website. Most artists mistakenly waste time on their website before learning effective business strategies.
Want to Grow Your Art Business? DON’T Do This
The big mistake many artists make when trying to grow their art business is getting stuck in the fancy website rabbit hole. Before learning a few key business strategies, a website is not as important as most artists think. An art business without customers is like a hospital in the desert—it can't help anyone. So, I advise my students to focus on learning strategy first before diving into building a fancy website.
Where Should I Post My Art for Sale?
The best place to sell your art on social media is Instagram. With 130 million Instagram users tapping on the shopping button every month and 65% of U.S. consumers saying that a link in a post led them to a product they weren’t originally interested in purchasing, Instagram has a major influence on driving purchasing behavior.
The 1st Step to Start or Scale Your Business is Your Social Media Presence
Starting your art business on social media has numerous benefits. You can get comfortable posting your artwork, talking about it, and evolving your creativity in real time with your audience, who you will come to know as friends.
Even if you're new to the art world, there's no barrier to entry on social media. You can start making sales right away without a website. This is something my Sell Art on Social System students start immediately, even if they don't have a website. They begin building their social media presence right away to learn how to systemize their content planning workflow, routinely make offers, grow a loyal following, and sell their art (no website needed).
